The Red Sox have re-signed LHP Hideki Okajima to a one-year contract. Okajima was non-tendered by the team earlier this offseason.
Okajima turned 35 on Christmas and appeared to be heading back to Japan after a lukewarm reception on the free agent market. Given his age and performance in 2010 (a bloated 4.50 ERA in 56 games out of the bullpen) this did come as a surprise.
Okajima will compete for a spot in the bullpen and will likely win a role. The signing has not been confirmed and many of the details are not ironed out yet in his contract, but Okajima has been given guaranteed money.
